What is a Civil Partnership Wedding?

A civil partnership is a legal agreement between a couple that gives them the same legal rights as if they were married. It’s about making a life-long commitment to each other, just as a married couple do.

Civil partnerships were introduced in 2005 to make sure that same-sex couples had the same legal rights as married couples. The law changed in 2014, letting same-sex couples get married for the first time; and in 2019, it changed again, giving opposite-sex couples the right to choose a civil partnership over a traditional marriage.

Today, all couples have the choice between a marriage and a civil partnership. Whichever approach you choose, it’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate your relationship with your loved ones.

How is a Civil Partnership Different from a Marriage?

Both ways of tying the knot involve exchanging legally binding words and signing a schedule. The main difference is that a marriage can involve a religious element and a civil partnership doesn’t. Which option you choose is entirely dependent on you as a couple.

Another difference is that if you are already civil partners, you can decide to convert this to a marriage (another reason for a celebration!). This doesn’t apply the other way around.

Where Can You Hold a Civil Partnership Ceremony?

You can hold your civil partnership ceremony in any place that’s licensed. At Country House Weddings, all our beautiful stately homes are licensed for civil partnerships as well as civil marriage ceremonies.

A country house civil partnership is a wonderful way to bring a touch of heritage to a modern ceremony, and it can be as extravagant or as intimate as you wish.

Why Choose a Country House for Your Civil Partnership Ceremony?

Elegant and naturally romantic, a historic country house makes a refined setting for your civil partnership celebrations. With everything under one roof – the ceremony, the celebrations and possibly even the accommodation – you and your guests can really relax and enjoy your special day. If your venue is exclusive use, you can truly make yourselves at home.

What to Consider When Choosing Your Civil Partnership Wedding Venue

  • Availability, capacity and budget: does the venue meet these three critical tests?
  • Does the venue offer all-inclusive civil partnership wedding packages?
  • Is the venue exclusive use?
  • Does the catering suit your tastes?
  • Is the location easily accessible for you and your guests?
  • What are the rooms / outdoor spaces like for the ceremony and celebrations?
  • Is there accommodation at the venue?
  • Do we love it?

How to Personalise Your Civil Partnership Ceremony

Even if you choose an all-inclusive civil partnership package, you can personalise your venue and the day itself to create something truly special for you as a couple. Classic weddings tend to follow a more set pattern; however, a civil partnership can give you more freedom to design your own day.

Speak with your wedding manager about extra little touches that you can add to your civil partnership package – and have a wonderful time planning your celebrations!

  • Write your own vows, and include music and reading in the ceremony
  • Decorate the house with your favourite colours and flowers
  • Have a theme that speaks to you as a couple. Travel, theatre, animals, a specific place/season/novel/movie… What do you both love?
  • Night owls? Have a sophisticated twilight wedding
  • Create personalised wedding favours for your guests
  • What’s your favourite food and drink? Bring individual touches into the menus or have extras like food stalls, an evening barbecue or a cocktail bar

What is the Dress Code for a Civil Wedding Ceremony?

The dress code for a civil wedding ceremony is whatever you want it to be.
