What is a Civil Partnership Wedding?
A civil partnership is a legal agreement between a couple that gives them the same legal rights as if they were married. It’s about making a life-long commitment to each other, just as a married couple do.
Civil partnerships were introduced in 2005 to make sure that same-sex couples had the same legal rights as married couples. The law changed in 2014, letting same-sex couples get married for the first time; and in 2019, it changed again, giving opposite-sex couples the right to choose a civil partnership over a traditional marriage.
Today, all couples have the choice between a marriage and a civil partnership. Whichever approach you choose, it’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate your relationship with your loved ones.
How is a Civil Partnership Different from a Marriage?
Both ways of tying the knot involve exchanging legally binding words and signing a schedule. The main difference is that a marriage can involve a religious element and a civil partnership doesn’t. Which option you choose is entirely dependent on you as a couple.
Another difference is that if you are already civil partners, you can decide to convert this to a marriage (another reason for a celebration!). This doesn’t apply the other way around.
Where Can You Hold a Civil Partnership Ceremony?
You can hold your civil partnership ceremony in any place that’s licensed. At Country House Weddings, all our beautiful stately homes are licensed for civil partnerships as well as civil marriage ceremonies.
A country house civil partnership is a wonderful way to bring a touch of heritage to a modern ceremony, and it can be as extravagant or as intimate as you wish.

What is the Dress Code for a Civil Wedding Ceremony?
The dress code for a civil wedding ceremony is whatever you want it to be.
Your choice
You’re not tied down by convention; however, if you want the full white wedding complete with top hats and tails, you’re very welcome to go down the traditional route!
seasons
Dress for the seasons, with plush fabrics for winter and lighter or floatier clothes for the summer. Choose colours and textures that you love, and most importantly, pick an outfit that you feel confident in.
Wedding Party
It’s the same for your attendants. Do you have a theme, and will you be providing outfits for attendants like the bridesmaids and flower girls? Or, can your team wear whatever they feel happy and comfortable in? When it comes to what to wear for a civil wedding, you can write your own rules.

Just one quick note on dress code. Some of your guests may not have attended a civil wedding celebration before, so may need a bit of guidance on the invitation…
